Students demonstrate exceptional digital literacy during Hispanic Heritage Month competition
CLEARWATER — Plato Academy Clearwater secured second place among Pinellas County schools in the recent myON Hispanic Heritage Month Digital Read-In, marking a significant achievement in the district’s month-long reading initiative.
The challenge, which ran from September 15 through October 15, engaged students across the county through Renaissance myON, a digital reading platform designed to foster independent reading habits and cultural awareness. Students selected from a curated collection of texts celebrating Hispanic heritage while tracking their reading progress throughout the campaign.
The myON platform allows young readers to choose books aligned with their interests and reading levels, creating a personalized literary experience that builds both confidence and accountability. During the competition period, Plato Academy Clearwater students demonstrated sustained engagement with the digital library, accumulating reading minutes that placed them among the county’s top performers.
“Digital reading platforms have transformed how students interact with literature,” said educators familiar with the program. “When children can select books that resonate with them, they develop stronger connections to reading as a lifelong practice.”
The Hispanic Heritage Month theme provided students an opportunity to explore diverse narratives, historical perspectives, and cultural contributions through age-appropriate digital texts. The competition structure encouraged consistent daily reading while introducing young learners to stories they might not encounter in traditional classroom settings.
Renaissance myON remains available to county students through free registration, extending access to thousands of digital books beyond organized challenges. The platform’s year-round availability supports continuous literacy development and allows families to maintain reading routines during school breaks and summer months.
