    Frequently Asked Questions

    FAQs in text format

What makes Plato Collegiate Academy different from other public schools?

Plato Collegiate Academy, like the rest of the Plato Academy campuses, is a tuition-free public charter school, which means we provide the same access as traditional public schools but with greater flexibility to design learning experiences that best serve students. We are known for academic excellence, consistently earning an A rating from the state. Families choose us because of our safe, family-like environment, small school feel, strong communication with parents, and curriculum that focuses not just on meeting state standards but on building well-rounded, critical thinkers who are prepared for success in life.

How does a charter school like Plato work with the school district?

Charter schools are public schools that are approved and overseen by the local school district. Plato Collegiate Academy follows the same accountability standards, testing, and reporting as district schools. The difference is that we have more flexibility to innovate and create unique learning opportunities for students. We are publicly funded, tuition-free, open to all students, and held to the same rigorous academic standards as any other public school campus.

Is there a risk that a charter school like Plato Collegiate Academy could close?

Families sometimes worry that charter schools are temporary. In reality, Plato Academy schools have been part of Florida education for more than 20 years. Our campuses consistently earn top grades from the state, and we have established a strong track record of excellence. Unlike schools that lease their space, Plato Academy owns the Tampa campus property, which means we are here to stay and fully committed to serving families in the long run. Our stability in leadership, academics, and facilities sets us apart.

I heard that the Plato Academy campus in Largo had to close. Should I be concerned that this could happen in Tampa?

The situation in Largo was unique and beyond our control. In that case, the landowner of the property made the decision to sell. The closure was not related to academic performance, finances, or the way our schools operate. Importantly, no families were left without a place. Every parent who wanted their child to remain in a Plato Academy school was offered a seat at another campus. Teachers and staff from that location also continued with us, teaching at our other schools. This experience actually demonstrated the strength and unity of the Plato Academy community, as we smoothly transitioned families and staff without interrupting their educational experience.

What kind of curriculum does Plato Collegiate Academy use?

Our curriculum is built to challenge and support students at every level. We provide a strong foundation in core academics such as reading, writing, mathematics, and science, while also integrating technology, the arts, and hands-on experiences. Students benefit from small class sizes and teachers who know them individually. We emphasize character education, leadership skills, and community involvement so that children not only excel academically but also grow into compassionate, responsible individuals.

How do you support students in elementary school?

Elementary school years are critical for building a love of learning. At Plato, our younger students enjoy small group instruction, individualized support, and teachers who partner with parents to guide each child’s progress. We also offer enrichment programs that go beyond the basics to spark curiosity and creativity. Families often tell us they appreciate the warm, welcoming environment where their children feel safe and confident every day.

What opportunities are available to middle school students?

Middle school is a time of transition, and we make sure our students are supported academically and socially. Students benefit from advanced coursework, exposure to leadership opportunities, and programs that prepare them for the challenges of high school. Our teachers are skilled at guiding students to become independent learners while still providing the structure and encouragement they need. Extracurricular activities allow students to explore their talents and interests outside the classroom.

What does high school at Plato Collegiate Academy look like?

Our high school program was created with the future in mind. Students have access to rigorous courses, including honors, Advanced Placement, and dual-enrollment opportunities with local colleges. This means students can get ahead on college credits while still in high school. Beyond academics, we provide pathways for students to explore career interests, develop leadership skills, and prepare for success whether they choose college, technical programs, or the workforce. Small class sizes and dedicated teachers ensure that every student receives the attention and guidance needed to succeed.

How do families stay involved at Plato Academy?

We believe parent involvement is essential to student success. Families are encouraged to partner with us through regular communication, volunteer opportunities, and events that bring the school community together. Our teachers and administrators are approachable and always open to questions or feedback. Parents tell us they feel like true partners in their child’s education, which creates a strong, supportive school culture.

How do I apply for enrollment?

Enrollment at Plato Collegiate Academy is open to all interested families. Applications are available online, and if more students apply than we have available seats, we use a fair lottery system. Families are encouraged to apply early and attend informational sessions to get to know our school better before enrolling.
