A Vision Taking Shape: Derek Donnelly Brings an Underwater World to Plato Academy Pinellas Park

The students of Plato Academy Pinellas Park now walk into their school greeted by beautiful art every morning. Artist Derek Donnelly has completed the first phase of an impressive lobby mural, an underwater scene woven through with Greek classical imagery that sets a strong tone for the school environment from the very first step inside. The work continues, with Donnelly set to extend the mural across more of the surrounding walls.

What is already visible is enough to make visitors pause. Donnelly has introduced the concept of Greek columns rising through the underwater composition, bridging the ancient world and the natural one in a way that feels both imaginative and purposeful. For a school that carries Plato’s name and draws its educational philosophy from classical ideals, the imagery hits exactly the right note: a visual conversation between where Western thought began and the Florida world these students grow up in every day.

Donnelly brought students into the early stages of the process, opening a session where young students sketched their impressions and shared what they hoped to see. Those ideas fed into the artist’s creative process, adding a layer of community connection to work that is, at its core, driven by his own artistic vision and craft.

As the mural grows to fill more of the lobby, it will become an increasingly immersive environment, the kind of space that changes how a school feels from the moment you walk in the door.

The project has been made possible by the generosity of donors who support the Plato Education Foundation, people who understand that investing in a school’s environment is investing in its students.

Updates on the mural’s progress will be shared as Derek Donnelly continues his work at the Pinellas Park campus.
