The courtyard at Plato Academy Seminole buzzed with anticipation last week as students, faculty, and staff gathered for the school’s annual Greek Olympics Opening Ceremony, a tradition the charter school network has carried forward every year since 2011.
The event opened on a high note, with Mrs. Thomas delivering a performance of the Star-Spangled Banner, followed by a rendition of the Greek National Anthem performed by four members of the school’s Chorus Club: Marley, Maci, Nadja, and Ofelia. The crowd responded with warm applause.
Principal Jones, delivered the opening remarks with a mix of humor and genuine pride. She acknowledged the weather had forced the cancellation of a planned flyover and fireworks display, but made quick work of the moment, quipping that with talent like that on stage, pyrotechnics were hardly necessary. The line landed well.
She then turned to the deeper purpose of the day. Speaking to the nearly 3,000-year-old history behind the Olympic tradition, the principal reminded students that participating in these games connects them to something far larger than a single school year or a single competition. At Plato Academy, she said, students are part of a legacy built on excellence, endurance, and the ancient Greek concept of Arete, the pursuit of one’s highest potential and the daily effort to be the best version of oneself.
The torch relay drew one of the morning’s loudest responses. Eight student runners, Sofia K., Aleks G., Makenzie C., Fisher H., Kamrynn R., Jack F., Sammy W., and Ryan H., carried the ceremonial flame to the ceremony grounds, each one greeted with cheers as the torch passed from hand to hand.
With the flame lit and the athletes assembled, the principal closed her remarks by urging competitors to carry that same fire into the week of games ahead, and to remember that the competition is as much about supporting teammates as it is about personal performance.
The games are now underway.
