The dual celebration recognizes both Oxi Day, a Greek national holiday commemorating the country’s refusal to surrender to Axis forces in 1940, and the service of American veterans. The K-8 school has made this combined observance a tradition, using it as an opportunity to teach students about courage, sacrifice, and standing firm in the face of adversity.
The school encourages families to attend the morning performance when possible, as the afternoon show typically draws larger crowds. Doors open 30 minutes before each program begins.
The celebration reflects the school’s commitment to honoring both its Greek educational heritage and American patriotic values. Students across all grade levels participate in the program, which includes performances, presentations, and tributes to veterans in the school community.
Oxi Day, celebrated annually on October 28 in Greece, marks the moment when Greek Prime Minister Ioannis Metaxas rejected Benito Mussolini’s ultimatum demanding passage for Italian troops through Greek territory. The refusal, conveyed in a single word, “Oxi,” meaning “no” in Greek, led Greece to enter World War II on the side of the Allies. The holiday serves as a symbol of national pride and resistance against oppression.
Families planning to attend should arrive early to secure seating, particularly for the 10 a.m. show.
