How can I support my student at home?

1. Read 20 Minutes Daily

Encourage your student to read for at least 20 minutes every day. Depending on their age and abilities, this could look like:

  • Reading together.
  • Your student reading aloud to you.
  • Independent reading time.
  • Listening to audiobooks.

Take time to engage with what they are reading by asking specific questions like:

  • Who are the main characters?
  • What happened in the story?
  • Why did the characters make certain choices?
  • When and where does the story take place?

Resources:

  • MyON: A digital reading tool accessible via your student’s Clever account, offering a variety of books for all grade levels.

3. Homework

Stay on top of homework completion:

  • Ensure your student is turning in assignments daily or weekly (depending on grade level).
  • If unsure about homework expectations, contact your student’s teacher(s) to clarify how to locate and support assignments.

4. Monitor Grades Weekly

Every Tuesday, review grades with your student to:

  • Identify missing assignments.
  • Track progress toward mastery of skills.
  • Work together on improving grades.

When discussing grades:

  • Use an open and supportive tone to encourage dialogue.
  • Avoid assigning blame immediately, which can make students more responsive and open to sharing reasons behind their performance.
  • Partner with your student to develop strategies for improvement.

5. Stay in Contact with Teachers

Maintain regular communication with your student’s teachers. A strong parent-teacher partnership ensures everyone is working together to support your student’s growth and success.

Remember: Education is a partnership. Success requires consistent effort both at school and at home. Working together, we can help your student reach their full potential!
