Encourage your student to read for at least 20 minutes every day. Depending on their age and abilities, this could look like:
- Reading together.
- Your student reading aloud to you.
- Independent reading time.
- Listening to audiobooks.
Take time to engage with what they are reading by asking specific questions like:
- Who are the main characters?
- What happened in the story?
- Why did the characters make certain choices?
- When and where does the story take place?

2. Use iReady for Personalized Learning
iReady provides tailored learning paths in both Reading and Math for all K-8 students and is required of all students.
- ELA:
- Expectation: 45 minutes weekly with a minimum of 2 lessons passed.
- Math:
- Expectation: 45 minutes weekly with a minimum of 2 lessons passed.
How to Monitor Progress:
- Have your student log into iReady via Clever.
- Click on the subject area.
- Select “My Progress” to view:
- Minutes spent on tasks.
- Lessons completed and passed.
3. Homework
Stay on top of homework completion:
- Ensure your student is turning in assignments daily or weekly (depending on grade level).
- If unsure about homework expectations, contact your student’s teacher(s) to clarify how to locate and support assignments.
4. Monitor Grades Weekly
Every Tuesday, review grades with your student to:
- Identify missing assignments.
- Track progress toward mastery of skills.
- Work together on improving grades.
When discussing grades:
- Use an open and supportive tone to encourage dialogue.
- Avoid assigning blame immediately, which can make students more responsive and open to sharing reasons behind their performance.
- Partner with your student to develop strategies for improvement.
5. Stay in Contact with Teachers
Maintain regular communication with your student’s teachers. A strong parent-teacher partnership ensures everyone is working together to support your student’s growth and success.
