At Plato Academy Largo, International Day is one of the most anticipated events of the year, celebrating world cultures with a special focus on Greek culture reflecting the foundational role it plays in our charter and Plato Academy Schools’ educational philosophy.
Younger students sang songs in Greek while older students executed the intricate steps of traditional Greek dances. The highlight of the dance performances was when our Greek teacher Mr. Ioannis Giavaras, affectionately known as “Mr. Greek,” joined them on stage. His infectious energy and joy delighted the audience and inspired the students.
The cultural celebration continued with a theatrical play orchestrated by Greek teacher Mrs. Kapnogiannis that brought the legends of ancient Greece to life. Students dressed as the twelve Olympians, each portraying a different deity from the Greek pantheon who introduced themselves and spoke about their unique attributes and stories. The young actors embodied gods and goddesses like Zeus (Δίας), Athena (Αθηνά), Apollo (Απόλλων), and Aphrodite (Αφροδίτη), bringing a touch of ancient mythology to the modern stage.
Τhe importance of Greek culture in shaping the educational ethos of Plato Academy Largo is evident. From the classical ideals of wisdom and courage to the celebration of art and storytelling, Greek heritage was interwoven into every aspect of the event and the school life in whole.
As we look forward to future celebrations, we remain dedicated to honoring the rich traditions that form the foundation of our school and inspire our students to become global citizens.
The event concluded with students singing under the guidance of our music teacher Mr. Piggott, the song “My Country Tis of Thee”.
