Weather Update

Wednesday, August 30, 2023 – 4:57 p.m.

Good evening Plato Academy families and staff,

We know it has been a long couple of days for many in our community and across the state. While we are grateful the Tampa Bay area did not get the full impact of the storm, we know there is damage from flooding in some parts of our area and that some of our families and staff have been affected. The districts have closed the shelters and are implementing procedures to reopen all schools tomorrow, Thursday, August 31st. Plato Academy schools will also open tomorrow in Pinellas, Pasco and Hillsborough counties. We have checked on each of our school sites and we are ready to reopen.

We want to get our children back to school, as quickly as possible, learning and preparing for their futures. If any of our students cannot get to school due to damage or flooding at their homes, or roadways that are not passable, we are asking parents to contact their school in the morning.

Thank you for your patience as we awaited the information from each district. We look forward to seeing all of the students tomorrow morning!

Wednesday, August 30, 2023 – 10:58 a.m.

Dear families and staff,

Plato Academy is closely monitoring the situation with Hurricane Idalia as we continue to see effects across all three counties.  Details coming out of Pinellas, HIllsborough and Pasco county school boards reflect decisions regarding safe bus routes, shelter usage and clean up of school sites. Districts have not yet made decisions on whether to stay closed or to open tomorrow.

These decisions will likely come closer to 5pm. Districts are waiting to see if local EOCs are going to continue to need shelters and for how long. There has been a lot of flooding and loss of power in the areas that are affecting some schools plus shelters. We are also awaiting the effects of the King Tide and Storm Surge that may come in later today.

Plato Academy is committed to the safety of our students and staff. We will continue to monitor the situation and continue to communicate district decisions. We generally follow district decisions on closures but we will keep you informed.

Tuesday, August 29, 2023

Based on the advice of the TRI County emergency management teams, all Plato Academy schools in Pinellas, Pasco and Hillsborough Counties will be closed on Tuesday and Wednesday and resume regular school hours on Thursday.

The closure includes all after school activities, other on site programs and sports programs. The school sites will be closed. The Plato Home Office will also be closed.

Based on information from the Emergency Management teams tropical storm Idalia is forecasted to impact Pinellas, Pasco and Hillsborough Counties as a category three hurricane which means the possibility of storm surge for coastal areas, damaging winds, inland flooding and widespread power outages. The safety of our students, staff and their families is of utmost importance to us with the storm expected to grow in intensity before landfall. We urge all families to take necessary precautions to protect their homes and loved ones by preparing emergency kits, securing outdoor items and staying updated with local advisories.

We will continue to send updates on our website, email and social media of any changes moving forward.

Please stay safe and we will ensure you’re updated throughout the storm.

Updates will be posted on this page and on facebook and Instagram pages.
