The annual tradition of the reenactment of the Lighting of the Olympic Flame ceremony took place this March at Plato Academy Clearwater.

The “Lighting of the Olympic Flame” ceremony is a symbolic event that marks the beginning of the Olympic Games. It is an ancient tradition that dates back to the ancient Olympics in Greece. The ceremony involves the lighting of the Olympic Flame at the archaeological site of Olympia, in Greece using a parabolic mirror to focus the sun’s rays, which ignites the flame in Olympia, Greece, the site of the ancient Olympics.

At Plato we honor this tradition celebrating the Olympic Games spirit of competition and mutual respect. The school choir sang Greek songs while groups of students performed traditional Greek dances. As the Olympic Games are an international celebration the event concluded with middle school students and teachers dancing songs from various countries and celebrating unity just as international athletes would do in the Olympic Games Opening Ceremony.
