At Plato Academy Schools, we believe in fostering a global perspective for our students, and our recent collaboration with the Sofia Andriola Language School in Limni, Evias, Greece, is an example of this effort. Mrs. Kalligas’ 8th-grade students had the unique opportunity in a series of lessons to engage in a virtual cultural exchange that highlighted the deep ties between Greece and Florida.
The session kicked off with students from Greece posing questions to our 8th graders in Greek. For our students, this was an exciting challenge that allowed them to apply their language skills in real-time. Responding in Greek gave them a sense of achievement and a deeper appreciation for the functions of the language.
During the second half of the lesson, our students switched to English, giving their Greek peers a chance to practice their conversational skills in a language different than Greek. A reciprocal learning experience that underscored the universal nature of education as a tool for connection and understanding.
While language practice was a key component of the session, the impact extended beyond grammar and vocabulary. Our students were able to glimpse life in another country, discovering similarities and differences in their daily routines, hobbies, and aspirations.
Both groups were surprised to learn about the common threads that connect their communities, from shared Mediterranean influences in cuisine to a mutual love for soccer. The conversation naturally flowed into discussions about cultural traditions, favorite music, and even future career dreams.
This virtual exchange is just the beginning of what promises to be a series of enriching monthly meetings. Each session will allow our students to delve deeper into the Greek language and culture while helping their Greek peers enhance their English skills.
But beyond the academic benefits, these interactions are about building friendships.
At Plato Academy, we’re excited to see where this partnership will lead. Perhaps one day, our students will have the chance to visit their friends in Greece (maybe during Plato Academy’s annual trip to Greece?) or host them here in Florida. In the meantime, these virtual meet-ups will continue to serve as a bridge, connecting two communities across the Atlantic.
